Postgraduate Studies in Weather and Climate Modeling

Postgraduate studies ‘Weather and Climate Modelling’: infosession 2023

The modelling of weather and climate is a hot research topic. The climate on our planet is changing with e.g. the previous 8 years being worldwide the warmest 8 years. Extreme weather events (floods, heat waves,...) often result in huge human and economic losses. What type of climate can we expect in the future? Will it ever be possible to make perfect weather forecasts? In the highly urbanized world of 2023 megacities face very specific challenges such as air pollution and the urban heat island (see https://vlinder.ugent.be/dashboard for data in Flemish cities). Can we use atmospheric models to investigate potential solutions (e.g. more green in the city,...) for these urban atmospheric problems?

Ghent University and the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) organize the unique postgraduate program ‘Weather and Climate Modelling’ to prepare scientists for a career in the previously described topics. During this program, national and international experts active at different scientific institutes (RMI, VITO,..) explain the students in detail how weather and climate models are functioning.

Interested? An infosession will be organised on Tuesday 2nd May (19h00 – 20h30). The program consists of mini-lectures about weather and climate modelling followed by all practicalities about the postgraduate program. The infosession will take place in room A3, 3rd floor, building S9 (Campus De Sterre, Gent). You are very welcome!

Detailed program:

  • 19h00: mini-lecture prof. Piet Termonia (teacher Atmospheric Modelling):
An introduction to weather and climate modelling.
  • 19h30: mini-lecture prof. Kwinten Van Weverberg (teacher Climatology):
Challenges in cloud and precipitation modelling.

  • 19h50: practical information about postgraduate program by prof. Steven Caluwaerts (teacher Dynamic Meteorology)
